Making a difference as the Volunteer Services Manager at ACH Group

Some career pathways are straightforward, some are paved with little side quests, and some are a bit of both. If you believe that a career journey guides you to find the right role – aligned with your purpose and your gift to share with the community – this has certainly been the case for Cate Balfour-Ogilvy, Volunteer Services Manager at ACH Group.

Cate joined ACH Group in July 2023, and her positivity, dedication, humour, and can-do attitude has transformed the way volunteering is cultivated in the community.

We asked Cate about her role as a Volunteer Services Manager at ACH Group, her advice for those considering volunteering, and some light-hearted questions.

Meet Cate Balfour-Ogilvy, ACH Group Volunteer Services Manager

From her early days in Renmark to her leadership roles across rural Australia, Cate’s life story is a testament to her passion for helping others and her dedication to fostering a sense of belonging among volunteers. In this interview, Cate shares her journey, insights, and the values that drive her work.

Tell us about yourself and your life journey that led you to become who you are.

I was born in Renmark and had an early start in different roles and experiences. In 1989, I had the incredible opportunity to be an exchange student in South Africa. After that, I pursued a Bachelor of Arts at Flinders University, although I often wonder why I chose that path!

In the early ’90s, I was fortunate to be crowned Miss Renmark and Miss Murraylands. I was lucky to have all four of my grandparents in my life until my early 20s, spending every school holiday in Adelaide.

My career has taken me across rural South Australia, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory, living and working in places like Renmark, Deniliquin, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Palmerston, Whyalla, Clare, and now Adelaide.

I’ve held numerous jobs, mainly in leadership roles within community services, including aged care, mental health, and disability.

My first job was managing the Renmark Tourist Office, where I had my first experience coordinating volunteers, many of whom knew me well. One was even a former teacher of mine!

My journey in community services began as a tutor for high school students at risk of nonattendance, a job I loved. One of my favourite roles was as Manager of the Top End Mental Health Organisation, a support group operated by people living with mental illness. It was truly inspiring.

What sparked your passion for guiding volunteers in making a difference and starting your role at ACH Group?

Working in aged care, I had long admired ACH Group for their leadership in person-directed care and their determination to promote choice and control. They always looked cool, and I remember hearing Ivy (Ivy Diegmann, General Manager Brand, Strategy & Innovation) speak on several occasions.

Volunteers bring such variety to our world with their different interests and life experiences. It’s amazing to watch volunteers connect with customers over shared interests or experiences.

On a personal level, I learn so much from them about doing my job better by understanding what truly matters.

Could you recount a moment that deeply resonated with you as a volunteer services manager?

There are so many moments, but one that stands out is the sense of togetherness that volunteering promotes. Recently, a couple of our volunteers became quite unwell, and the care and love that other volunteers showed them was heartwarming and beautiful.

Cate dedicates her time to welcoming new volunteers and ensuring they have everything they need to make a difference. She also attends volunteering expos, participates in events to expand volunteering opportunities, and builds partnerships with volunteer organizations.

What do you love most about your role?

The best part of my role is watching volunteers connect with our customers, employees, and each other. It’s meaningful, real, and fun.

What values drive your approach to recruiting volunteers?

Celebrating uniqueness and loving what we do are key values. Volunteers bring so much variety to our lives, and their altruism is a powerful motivator. These values are everything to our work.

Share a story of a volunteer whose journey touched you deeply.

Many stories have touched me, particularly those of volunteers who are newly arrived in Australia. Hearing about their journeys and the sacrifices they’ve made to start a new life here is incredibly moving.

They often miss their families deeply, and if we can help them find a sense of belonging here, we should. We are so lucky to have such amazing people choose to come here.

How do you create a sense of belonging and purpose for volunteers?

We do many things, like matching volunteers with roles that align with their skills and interests, and expressing gratitude and thanks at every opportunity.

Share a touching anecdote of a volunteer who went above and beyond to make a difference.

A memorable story is from last Christmas when a community member who had started the volunteer journey but had to put it on hold due to a job offer reached out. She had free time on Christmas Day and wanted to visit some customers.

We quickly arranged for her to visit four people, and she even put together small gifts and cards for them. It was such a beautiful gesture.

What is your vision for volunteering at ACH Group?

My vision is for a volunteer program that engages all community members, including those who identify with a range of diversities, for the benefit of our customers.

What’s one key message for those considering volunteering?

It’s not difficult to make a difference. The sum of all your parts—the skills and experiences you have – is exactly what we need.

What keeps your passion for volunteer management alive and thriving

Watching the benefits that volunteering brings to our world, hearing positive feedback from our customers about our volunteers, and seeing the joy that volunteering brings to our volunteers keep my passion alive. Their hearts are filled with joy, and it’s amazing to witness.

Describe yourself in three words and an emoji.

I asked my co-workers Dee and Evie for this one: Positive 😊, Selfless 🤲, Can-do 💪.

What do you enjoy in your free time?

I love spending time with my family, whether it’s watching kids play sports, going out for tea, or just laughing together. I feel very grateful to have my family.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to keep traveling, which is the standard answer. Aside from that, my life plan is to do whatever I can to have a long and happy life with those I love and who love me.

Happy Mother’s Day

Celebrating Mother’s Day

The mother and son bond between Gina and Yianni Anderson has only grown stronger since the pair joined forces working at ACH Group 18 months ago.

Yianni said working with his Mum had made him appreciate her even more and was looking forward to spoiling her on Mother’s Day.

“I’ve always been really close to my Mum, but it’s been great to actually see how she operates as a professional,” he said.

“She’s been a great mentor for me and has taught me a lot about how the corporate world operates.”

Gina has been ACH Group’s Property and Leasing Manager for almost seven years and is responsible for making sure staff and residents have access to great facilities.

Yianni started with ACH Group as an IT officer 18 months ago, supporting the organisation with the tools they need to do their job well.

Gina said while their jobs were very different, they were linked in that both were essential in providing the supporting functions necessary for ACH Group frontline staff to deliver caring, compassionate and timely care for older South Australians.

“We both work in jobs that support our staff to deliver the best care they can to older South Australians, and it is really important and rewarding work,” she said.

“When you are in those supporting roles there is a real art to how you are a good corporate citizen and I hope some of how I operate has been valuable for Yianni to see.

“Such an important part of being a Mum is being a good role model for your children so you can give them every chance to thrive.

“The fact that I get to be that role model for Yianni not just at home but also at work has been a real blessing.”

Yianni, his brother Jacob and Dad Damien will be taking Gina for lunch in the Adelaide Hill’s to celebrate Mother’s Day.

To all the Mothers out there. Happy Mother’s Day!

A day for the nurses

International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day 2024

This International Nurses Day, ACH Group wants to thank its more than 300 nurses who provide compassionate care to older South Australians.

Among those nurses are Monika Taneja and Jenny Joseph who are both senior nurses at ACH Group’s Kapara Residential Aged Care Home.

For Monika, being a good nurse boils down to three key pillars – care, compassion and empathy.

Reflecting on her career this International Nurses Day, Monika said being an aged-care nurse was challenging but hugely rewarding work.

“Aged care nursing is different to acute nursing because you aren’t just there as a carer you are there as an advocate,” she said.

“You aren’t just providing medical care; you are providing holistic care over an extended period to a resident and also their families.

“We are given such a privilege and responsibility to play a part in caring for our residents during their time with us.”

Monika got her start in residential aged care working as a carer with ACH Group while studying to get her nursing qualifications.

Jenny has been a nurse at Kapara for a little over a year and has come to love her time working with the residents.

“When you work with a resident or their family to make their time with us a little better and more enjoyable – that is the best part,” she said.

“I’ve worked in hospitals and acute care settings but the human touch you get in aged care is my favourite part of the job.”

Jenny works at ACH Group

More than 15 per cent of ACH Group’s 1900 strong workforce are enrolled or registered nurses.

Holistic approach to health with ACH Group

Brodie, Exercise Physiologist, and Geoff, Home Care Package customer at ACH Group.

Holistic approach to health with ACH Group

At ACH Group, our range of specialised allied health services and one-on-one or group programs are provided by professionals so you can exercise with confidence.

If you are affected by a new health issue or an ongoing chronic condition, through exercise, massage therapy and education your physiotherapist will support you to achieve your goals.

Brodie Hudd reflects on his career journey at ACH Group as a Physiotherapist.

What does he find most rewarding about his role and how does he collaborate with other team members when looking at a customer’s health journey?

Tell us about your career journey with ACH Group so far.
Prior to joining ACH Group, I provided locum physiotherapy services across some of ACH Group’s homes before applying for a permanent position. I have worked as part of the ACH Group Allied Health Team for nearly four years now. Initially, I worked full-time in the residential setting across ViTA, Perry Park, Kapara, and Yankalilla Residential Care Homes before transitioning to full-time community work at Christie Downs and Glenelg Health Studio 50+. Later, I split my time between residential and community settings, working out of ViTA and Christie Downs. Currently, I am covering as the Residential Health Services Team Leader across our north/eastern homes before returning to my split role.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?
The best part about my role is witnessing people progress towards their goals from their initial assessments to days, weeks, or months later. The confidence and joy they show upon reaching their goals is truly rewarding.

What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a Physiotherapist?
Explore all aspects of physiotherapy! While many are familiar with the traditional private practice model, there are numerous other work pathways. For those studying physiotherapy, I suggest reaching out to organisations like ACH Group to see what they offer. For instance, several of our personal trainers have pursued degrees in physiotherapy, exercise physiology, or occupational therapy and have subsequently worked for ACH Group. It offers valuable job experience and serves as a great stepping stone for career progression.

How does your role differ, given that you work across both community and residential health teams?
My role varies significantly due to my work in both community and residential settings. On my community days, I primarily work at our Christie Downs Health Studio 50+, where customers often come in with specific conditions or equipment requests, mainly via their Home Care Package or the Commonwealth Home Support Programme.

Together, we establish goals and treatment plans. Additionally, I lead a few group classes, including a balance class and a core strength class. In residential care, we similarly establish goals and treatment plans, often for residents with higher care needs. Physiotherapists are also responsible for creating and regularly reviewing mobility care plans that inform care staff about the appropriate level of assistance required for a resident.

Considering a holistic approach for customers, how do you collaborate with other team members when looking at a customer’s health journey?
Physiotherapists liaise with care managers regarding equipment recommendations, service requests (such as the number of physiotherapy visits or exercise classes), transportation arrangements, and monitoring customer well-being, such as fall prevention. Collaboration with allied health professionals ensures that care is comprehensive and not isolated.

What guidance would you give to someone who is at the beginning of their health journey?
For new customers looking to make a change, I recommend speaking to current customers about how our services have profoundly impacted their lives.

Can you describe yourself in three words and emojis?
Approachable, outdoorsy, encouraging 🏞️🏃‍♂️🙌

What activities do you enjoy during your free time?
I love being outdoors and you’ll often find me going for a run most days, either before or after work. When time allows, I enjoy multi-day hikes in Australia’s beautiful national parks. I’m also a passionate Port Adelaide football fan, which always sparks lively banter with our customers.

What are your future plans?
I would love to travel overseas more and experience the snow. Japan is next on my bucket list.

If your job had a theme song, what would it be?
I have no clue – perhaps something by ABBA, as it feels like 90% of the requests during my exercise classes are for their songs!

Helping customers to achieve their goals

As part of April Falls Month® we highlighted how Senso training can help improve balance for fall prevention.

Geoff, who regularly visits Senso training, shared, “I loved it right away, because I enjoy a good challenge and seeing the progress I make.”

Brodie added, “I think that’s the benefit of it, you can actually see the improvement with a simple graph on the screen.”

If you want to improve your balance and love a good challenge, Senso training might be just what you need!
