Alex Chung volunteers at ACH Group

Making my family proud

Alex Chong has two jobs, volunteers with two companies and has a wife. It is fair to say he is time poor.

Despite a busy schedule, volunteering was a non-negotiable for Alex who has just begun with ACH Group.

Alex said making the time to volunteer was a way to maintain his connection to his grandmother back home in Malaysia.

“I have a grandmother back in Malaysia who I speak with once a week online, and visit once a year for Chinese New Year,” he said.

Alex heard about volunteering opportunities at ACH Group through a career expo and was immediately attracted to the opportunity.

“I realised volunteering was an opportunity to contribute to the community and something I know would make my family proud.”

During his time at ACH Group, Alex has supported residents to vote in the Federal Election during an Australian Electoral Commission visit.

He’s also shared his chef skills to support residents engage in baking scones and afternoon treats.

Alex said volunteering had also helped him improve his communication and collaboration skills, particularly during a time of career transition.

“Being able to communicate collaboratively and effectively is essential in everything you do,” he said.

“I felt like I needed an opportunity to develop my face-to-face communication skills, and thought volunteering would be a good fit.

“Even at this early stage as a volunteer, I am feeling more confident in my ability to develop meaningful relationships with people.”
