Women’s Health Week 2026

Taking small steps that matter

Women’s Health Week is an opportunity to pause, talk openly about health and wellbeing, and recognise the everyday steps women take to look after themselves, often while caring for others, managing work, family and the many responsibilities of daily life.

This year, Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week runs from 7 to 11 September. The theme, “Do it anyway”, encourages women to prioritise their wellbeing, even when life is busy or competing demands make it difficult to put themselves first. It is about taking small, realistic steps on your terms, whether that means seeking support, asking another question, choosing rest, moving in a way that feels safe, or reconnecting with people and activities that matter most.

The theme centres on five everyday actions to support women’s health: fuel, move, rest, breathe and connect.

For older women, these simple health priorities can be especially powerful. Caring for health can begin with one decision to make the phone call, ask for help, attend the class, go outside, take time to rest, or try again in a way that feels manageable.

Healthy ageing starts with the courage to take the next step

Helena’s story reflects the heart of this year’s theme. After changes in her health and mobility made some everyday activities more difficult, accepting support was not easy. It meant facing what had changed and then choosing to take the next step.

The team at ACH Group’s Health Studio at Rostrevor supported Helena to find practical ways to keep moving, stay connected and continue taking part in the life she values. Her experience offers a reminder that looking after your own health matters, and that even small steps can make a difference.

As Helena says: “Please, face your fears. Starting exercise can feel daunting, but in a small class with an experienced team who understand, and other people who are working through their own challenges, you realise you do not have to do it alone.”

Tips for health and wellbeing – inspired by Helena’s experience

Say yes to support, when it feels right for you.

It can feel difficult to ask for help, even when family and friends encourage you.

Accepting support can make everyday life easier and help you keep doing the things that are important to you.

Move in a way that feels safe

Exercise does not need to be intense or intimidating to be worthwhile. Small classes, seated exercises and tailored guidance may make movement feel more achievable. At ACH Group, we can support you to build mobility, at your own pace.

Celebrate the small wins

Progress may not always look dramatic, and small improvements can add up over time.

Sometimes it’s being able to walk a little further, feel more confident getting out and about, or spend more time doing the things you enjoy.

Stay connected

Good health is about more than physical wellbeing. Spending time with others can boost your sense of connection, confidence and belonging. Simple actions, such as attending a class, joining a social activity, making a phone call or simply have a conversation can help you stay connected to the people and activities that matter to you.

Begin where you are and get the support that’s right for you

Helena’s goal is to keep improving her mobility, spend time with family, enjoy living in her own home, and feel confident taking part in the activities she loves. That reflects the spirit of this year’s theme of “Do it anyway”, starting where you are and taking one small step at a time.
