From student to staff in the blink of an eye
In the blink of an eye Asha Jose went from a student to an ACH Group staff member.
In February 2024, Asha did a three-week placement at ACH Group’s Healthia home as a mandatory component of her certificate three in individual support through Total Training Solutions.
The following month she went for a job interview at Healthia and in April began her career with ACH Group as a multi skilled worker.
Asha said while the jump from student to staff had been challenging it had been rewarding and had happened quickly.
“It seems fairly obvious, but the goal of every student is to go on and use what they learn to get a career they want,” she said.
“For me to have gone from a student doing a placement in February to working with ACH Group in just a couple of months has been amazing.
“It is just so good to know that if you work hard and you demonstrate your ability there is a clear and achievable pathway into the aged care industry with ACH Group.”
Asha said never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that less than a year after emigrating to Australia she would be walking the path of her dream career.
“It has been a big year,” she laughed.
“We’ve moved our life across the world and obviously getting the right qualifications and a job is a big-ticket item on any list in settling somewhere new.
“I’m just so grateful that my hard work has paid off, that I’ve been given an opportunity and now I can focus on growing a career in aged care.”
Asha did her placement at Heathia in Sheoak House but as a casual employee now works across each of the eight houses.
“The work I do to support the wonderful residents at Healthia brings me such immense pleasure,” she said.
“I feel truly, truly lucky.”
I started my journey with ACH Group as a student. I did a three week placement as part of my certification three in individual support at Healthia in February 2024 and got selected for a casual Multi Skilled Worker role in March.
My role is a Multi Skilled Worker. I support all Healthia residents with their daily living activities and to deliver upon their care plan. I also support the residents to maintain or improve their physical, cognitive, emotional, and social health. I work with a multidisciplinary skillset to support the overall wellbeing of residents.
ACH Group gave me the opportunity to do a student placement at Healthia where I gained the practical experience required to be a Multi Skilled Worker.
This was my first job in Australia having worked in the healthcare industry in India for many years. ACH Group provided me with fundamental training opportunities from manual handling, medication management and the Green House Project.
ACH Group also offers ongoing training in infection control, managing falls risks, waste management and a host of other key competencies.
Since Healthia uses the Green House Model of residential care, it is very much like working in a person’s home. The residents feel at home, but so do the staff.
My passion has always been healthcare and by working with ACH Group I am fulfilling my passion. I also love the flexibility that comes with being a casual worker.
I think the biggest misconception about working in aged care is that the quality of life for older people cannot be improved. With the help of dedicated and compassionate people, we can well and truly enhance people’s lives.
I would like to take on leadership roles such as becoming a senior caregiver or team leader and improve the quality of life of residents through innovative care practices.
