What is personal care?

Personal care provides practical support with daily tasks helping you remain independent and safe.

  • Applying moisturiser and skincare

No out-of-pocket costs from 1 October 2026

From 1 October 2026, approved personal care services are fully funded by the Australian Government through the Support at Home program.

If you’re approved for personal care services and have funding available in your budget, you can access these services without paying a contribution.

  • Assistance with self-administration of medication
  • Non-clinical continence support, such as changing aids

Personal care does not include:

  • Professional services that would usually be paid for (e.g., waxing, hairdressing).
  • Services funded through other systems, such as the cost of medications or dose administration aids
  • Medication administered by a nurse

How do I know if personal care is right for me?

If everyday tasks are taking more effort, you’re feeling less confident with some activities, or you’d simply like extra reassurance, personal care may be worth exploring.

Is personal care only for people with high support needs?

No. Many people access personal care for a little extra support with tasks that have become more difficult over time. You don’t need to wait until things become challenging to benefit from support.

How often can I receive personal care?

This depends on your goals, needs and approved funding. Some people receive support several times a week, while others only need occasional assistance.

Is personal care fully government funded?

From 1 October 2026, approved personal care services delivered through the Support at Home program are fully government funded and do not require a customer contribution.

Will my current services change?

No. Your existing services, approvals and care arrangements will continue as usual.
