Teena Steele volunteers at ACH Group

Purpose found in giving back

Growing up with a single parent, Teena Steele had a close relationship with her grandparents where she valued their candidness, humor and wisdom.

This close bond helped shape her appreciation for older adults and influenced her desire to give back through volunteering in aged care.

So when it came to thinking about new roles in retirement Teena’s first thought turned to volunteering in aged care and ACH Group was top of her list.

Teena volunteers two half days a week at ACH Group’s Highercombe Residential Care Home, where she shares a conversation with residents.

“I believe volunteering in aged care really gave me back a purpose to feel useful and helpful in a community I’m passionate about” she said.

“I find immense satisfaction in volunteering and I feel the experience is mutual with both myself and residents valuing each other’s company.

“There is something really satisfying about spending quality one to one time.”

“Trust takes time to build, but it’s been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience,” she said.
