Star Ratings for residential aged care

The Australian Government uses a Star Rating system to guide older Australians and their representatives to make choices about aged care.

About Star Ratings

Each aged care home receives an overall Star Rating and a rating aganst 4 sub-categories:

  • Residents’ experience – based on survey feedback from at least 10% of residents about their experiences at their aged care home.
  • Compliance – based on regulatory decisions by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.
  • Staffing – based on the average care time residents receive from registered nurses, enrolled nurses, and personal care workers.
  • Quality measures – based on quality of care.

What is an optimal star rating?

The way the star ratings are formed is quite complex. As a general rule, any residential care home with three or more stars will provide good care and support for you or your loved one.
