For connection in retirement
Volunteering has given Anna Giordino back her spark after she entered retirement.
After 40 years as a Care Worker in aged care homes, Anna retired in 2021 and wanted to maintain her engagement and connection with people.
“My life had been go, go, go up until my retirement,” she said.
“Then I got a knock on the door from my neighbour who suggested I do some volunteering.”
That knock on the door led to Anna becoming a volunteer at ACH Group’s Highercombe Residential Care Home.
“I’ve never looked back,” Anna said.
“Through volunteering I get to spend quality time with residents and the connections I’ve made over the past few years are now so strong.
Anna had previously volunteered in her children’s school tuck-shop and is a life member of the Mary Potter Foundation which supports the Calvary Hospital.
Anna said it was surprising that the prospect of volunteering post-retirement hadn’t come to her naturally after a life spent supporting her community.
“I don’t think I am the only retiree who has for one reason, or another has considered volunteering is off the cards once you reach a certain age,” she said.
“I’ve had such a rewarding experience at ACH Group, and I hope others have the chance to experience something similar.
